Before I get the expected responses that yamaha oil injection is great here is my situation: my oil pump housing is cracked, it is leaking oil out the adjustment shaft area, and is completly missing the throttle linkage, also the oil tank has JB weld on it and the cap is cracked. The boat and motor were dirt cheap, but in need of some help. I'm not really interested in investing much money in keeping the oil injection, I'd prefer just save the extra cash and go to premix.

I have read that you can remove the pump and pull the driveshaft and then re-assemble and plug the oil line and disconnect sensors, or short them to ground. I pulled the driveshaft and re-attached the oil pump to the block, but I just wanted to make sure i've done all that is needed before starting her up. MY question is is that ALL i need to do?

Thanks,
Paul

You will spend more money on oil than it would cost to replace the oil pump. In addition you will have to replace spark plugs more frequently. It is always best to look at life cycle cost rather than initial cost.

While I do understand there are some disadvantages to running premix, I am a mechanic and though I dont generally work on outboards cleaning carbs is nothing new to me. If the cost to repair my current oil injection were say less than $100 I probably would, but I priced the parts and its closer to $300 for the new parts. I paid $400 for the boat+motor. I happen to have a huge surplus of spark plugs purchased a couple years ago when an auto parts store was going out of business, I literally have 50+ that fit this motor, on top of that I expect to use the boat only maybe 5-10 times per year. If I consider oil costs alone I could probably go 10 years without hitting $300 in oil, probably 20 years before i hit a $300 difference in premix vs. oil injection, by then I may not even own this motor. I am aware the oil injection probably performs a bit better, but in my opinion that $300 could be better spent elsewhere. Oh and I have a cracked oil injection pump, I bought it like this so i have no idea what happened but it IS broken and if this happened while out on the water there is a fair chance the motor would be toast because of it, I'd prefer not risk it.

Thanks for input, I went ahead and started it up, seems to run ok, guess i'll need to get it in the water for the final checkup.

your on the right track. on that motor I probably would not spend the money to replace an oil pump.
you wont replace plugs any faster and regaurdless of what bassman thingy says, VRO worked and worked very well, on OMC stuff, Yamaha uses precision blend. a world apart.
the only reason to reinstall the pump is to plug the hole. to make it clean buy the block off plate or make one.
if you simply unplug the oil level sensor wires it may show you a low oil level in the tank but will run fine.
in your case? I would not spend much until I knew the motor was ok.
especially if its seen saltwater.
a tip? forget every thing ya know about autos. will pay for itself in the long run.

A brand new Yamaha oil pump is $109.75 Linkage rod is included with the oil pump along with three check valves and some other parts. If it were me I would sell some of the spark plugs and install the oil pump.

Thanks Bruce, where did you find it for $109? I'm probably not looking in the right place for parts, it was about $180 + tank at $70 + cap at $12 and there was no note as to it including the link ($12 i think) or lines and check valves. Anyhow I may consider switching back if everything else checks out and the motor runs well in the water, as of right now i've not had this one in the water so no point in spending more money only to find that it needs more work in another area. I appreciate the input.
