Does it matter what gear you are in for Lower Unit Removal

OMC factory manual says put engine in reverse to remove lower unit.

Does it matter what gear you are in for lower unit removal???
Would being in Forward hurt?

No, but it must go back the same as when removed. Rev likely gives more clearance

Not really sure about that, however, I would venture a guess that it's mainly an "accessibilty" issue. As long as you don't force anything, you should be fine. It's always best to follow the manual when you can though.

only matters in terms of making it easier to attach the linkage when putting back together (can be tight under the powerhead)

Got home, shifted it to forward. Pulled cotter pin, pushed shift lever, than grabbed the shift lever with some needle nose pliers and pulled toward me. Had lower unit off in 7minutes from the start time.
Miles away from where I was yesterday.
