Does Location of fuel tank(s)....

make a difference in Pontoon speed? I had 2 6 gallon tanks under the seat. I took those out and put a 12 gallon tank on the outside beside the outboard. 12 gallons equaling approx 72lbs. Seems that this new location has drastically slowed down the top speed of the Pontoon. When someone moves from the front to the back seat the Pontoon slows a bit on the GPS. So I am thinking moving the fuel tank so close to the outboard would slow it down even more??
I have notice no difference in how the 1993 Yamaha 40hp runs or cranks. So I don't think the outboard is the problem

I would not think it should make that much of a difference, then again it doesn't take much to affect a 40hp motor. Try running the tank with just a few gallons of gas in it and see what happens.
Did you trim out your motor to offset the weight being added to the rear?

Let us know what happens.

No trim setting gauges on the old pontoon. I will bring it up gradually and see if the speed increases. Thanks for the idea. I am in the habit of making sure the tank is full before going out so I haven't tried the few gallon deal. That would be a good test too. I will post the results when we go out next time. Not sure about today. Looks cloudy and cooler than yesterday. Yesterday was a Sunny 80 degrees

Moving the fuel back pushed the back of your pontoon lower in the water, see if you can raise the motor one hole.

I didn't see you post before we went to the Lake. Decided to take her out for a short spin after waiting for the Sun to come out. I did what Lakegeorge suggested concerning the trim. Upping the trim dropped the front down some and it went a little faster. Had a little over half a tank and that helped some too. I will check and see if I can raise the motor one hole.
The back deck part is lower than where the 2 other fuel tanks were sitting. So that might make any weight seem heavier. Have to be an engineer to figure that one out lol You put weight on stands, it is lighter

If your pontoon is a displacement hull (The boat is not designed to ever be on plain) then I would think weight distribution would have little impact on performance. You are displacing the same amount of water no matter how you distribute the weight.

On the other side of the discussion, if your motor is lower in the water due to the distribution there would be more drag and the angle of the motor would change. Trimming only corrects one of those issues. Here is where a hydrofoil "could" offer a performance improvement if it allows you to move your outboard up without cavitation. Hydrofoils have a bad reputation around here because they are typically used to bring a boat on plane easier at the cost of performance. In your case it might allow you to increase performance by raising your motor height to a point where you would cavitate without the foil. Adding a foil without changing motor height would be a questionable move. Adding one with a change in motor height is not guaranteed to increase performance either so do your research if you plan on considering this suggestion.

The 2 toons are rounded bottom ones that go to a cutting edge at the bow. I do notice when a person walks from the front seat to the rear seat then the speed goes down 1 or so mph. The speed goes up when we put coolers etc up front. When I first test drove the boat the speed topped out at 17 mph with 2 people on board including me. I am not sure how much he had emptied out ie Ladder, anchor, gas tanks etc. Now with the gas tank on back and loaded with a cooler and some gear bags, small anchor, paddles top speed is a little over 9 mph.
I wonder if the board the motor is connect too along with that housing sinking further into the water would cause more of a drag? Yea I think the motor is aiming the boat more upward than forward

From 17mph to 9mph is quite a drop. Are you sure you are not taking on water in one of your toons? Is it possible you have seaweed tangled in your prop? Maybe you are not getting enough rpms on that motor under load making it effectively a 15-25 hp motor. Of course i am just speculating over here.

What is the max hp rating for the pontoon?

I don't see that it leans over any. Looks level to me and the water line looks normal. The boat is a 20 footer in fresh water lake. I checked out the prop and didn't see anything wrapped around it. I will look closer at that. I clean the filter and change the plugs every Spring. Couple of years ago had a compression test done--110/120. The only thing I did wrong was not opening the vent when I first got it for a good many rides . I was not familiar with outboard motor venting. But then after that the compression test was close to normal. Just noticed the lack of speed this year and put the gas tank on the rear at the end of last year. Could be the rpms
