checking out the bilge pumps on my new boat...

can't post make/model, but have 2 of them, think they're 1000 gph.

anyway, had a little water in the bilge from 24 hrs of hard rain the other day. had the wife power up and maintain the bow real high (hard to get water out of a very deep v hull). i sat in the back and watched the operation of my aft pump. as it did it's job, i noticed a small pin hole in the face that was spraying water back into the bilge.

now i know it sounds dumb, but any chance that is there for a reason? i was ready to jump on patching it or just getting a new pump, but my dad raised this question. so just to be sure, i'm asking you. doesn't make sense a pump would have this "recirc" feature, but who knows. it did empty the bilge with no problem.

This is a pure guess but being as these pumps are not real powerhouses it may be a relief to allow the pump to devolop some velocity to be able to push the water uphill and out the transom. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

thanks boomyal. felt stupid even asking the question, but realized it could be by design.

Air bleed. They're little centrifigul pumps that will air lock under the right... or wrong circumstances. That little hole allows the suction side to fill with bilge water a little easier. Mine does it too :)

thank you. would have felt really dumb replacing a perfectly good pump, or worse, trying to patch the hole.
