The guy who works on my Mercury 175 horsepower says it needs to be rebuilt. It is ten years old but has very few hours and has always been garaged.
Can anyone tell me what the compression should be on this V-6?
Thanks.
Re: Does my outboard need to be rebuilt

when you check the compretion on the Merc. see if they are all the same. (balanced) within a few lbs. Other than that if it runs good don't worry about it. you can still get good power out of a used outboard. If it won't start, fouls out, or low end and high end power problems you might have to rebuild it. If it's not broke don't fix it.
good luck,
Matt

I checked the compression today and all
6 cylinders were right at 75 pounds.
I am having problems in that 2000 to 3000
rpm range. Runs real rough.

ODD,

Thanx for the information. Especially about trying another guage. The one I borrowed from a shade tree mechanic looked like Henry
Ford may have used it early in his carreer.
