They'll have an Amusement Park in Chernobyl before that oil goes stale. ;)

But if left open(In a container or in the oil resevoir on VRO, Etc.) it can pick up moisture over time....

I have read about oil in the vro tanks turning jelly like and clogging up the "sock" filter.

Is that the oil going bad, or is that contamination?

Even if the oil doesn't go bad, contamination is still a possability. It's cheap enough to discard and replace if you have doubts about contaminants.

Well, I know that it's been processed and contains additives, but it did sit in the ground for millions of years!

But I do too.....drain and refill fuel or oil when in doubt....tain's worth the gamble.

Mark

I had a can of oil go bad on me once. I tried to steer it down the right path, but it just wouldn't listen. Next thing you know, bad attitude, new friends, bad grades......then the 2 AM phone call from the police.....yeah....oils can go bad.....real bad.

Re: does oil go bad?

Technically, engine oils have a shelf life of about 4 years. Gear oils are about half that. This is mainly due to the additives. Not all oil additives are completely soluble nor with they remain soluble. They will eventually precipitate out of the oil. You can figure that the simpler the oil formulation, the longer the shelf life.

Signs of storage instability are a gel or sticky liquid at the bottom of the container, floc, haze, color change, milky appearance, or precipitates and solid materials present in the oil.

Sure, just be careful what kind of oil you use to pop it. ;)
