I just bought this boat in june so I don't have any background on the drive

232AMFTC 1987 2.3L OMC

Dropped the lube out of the drive today and is was thick as molasses, really green goo the first 10 mins then eventually it turned black, I also pulled the top cover off the drive and looked at the gears on top. there was a pile of green in there as well. I guess I need some help here with information. I ended up pulling the drive off the boat as well as the drive pivot? (to access the bellows) I ordered both new bellows and gaskets for replacing. Any of the top OMC guys here want to chime in and give me some info on what to look for and take care of while I have the drive off. I am also open to info and tips for shift cable adjustment. I did read the article on here about the adjustment.(cable looks pretty good IMO)

if anyone know where to score a trim sender would be helpful. thanks for all the help

NO.

You have water in the oil.

What did it look like last year when you changed it?

Unless it's obvious, you might want to do a pressure/vac check. ..........that should reveal where it's leaking.

so hook up a pressure/vacuum tester to the lower unit on or off the boat? and just listen for the leak?

Re: Does this look right?

I'd be lookin' for....a shop to replace the seals that are leaking....and for a trim sender....right on iboats here...Sierra makes an aftermarket replacement....that I have used....and its the only one that lasted more than 2 seasons in salt water!

the green is probably Mercruiser High Performance gear lube, you can use it in a Cobra, I do with no problems at all...but you got water in there...good thing you caught it.....

That may be a good thing! If all you need to do is replace drain, fill and vent plug seals!

Make absolutely sure you fill that thing like the manual suggests! I think that model holds 64oz of oil.

Re: Does this look right?

maybe a stupid question but.........
is there anyway to maybe (douche) clean the inside of the drive

like maybe fill it again with gear lube and re-drain just to try and get out all the green goo.
