i'm asking for a co-worker, he has a 1996 glasstron with 5.7L and alpha 1 outdrive. he keeps it in a rack at the marina. they just called and said his boat was dripping fluid on the one under him, said he needs a new shift shaft bushing assembly...quoting him $385 to repair, parts and labor.

the thing is that they saw the leak and opened his outdrive up, i guess if that's needed to make the diagnosis. then they called and asked if he'd authorize the repairs...repairs for something he hasn't seen himself.

does this sound plausible? i have an inboard so i'm no help to him on the outdrive.

also, do marina's generally open your stuff up without first asking? i know it depends on his contract so i'm just wondering what other marina's generally do or do not do.

thanks!

It is a common place to leak .

I would not be happy if they did work with out asking BUT his boat was causeing dammage to another boat and at the least they would have to move him ASAP and charge for the move and the labor to clean the other boat

just found out that my buddy's co-owner gave the ok for them to open it up. that makes better sense.

That sounds high in price, unless the rack storage (remove boat, rerack boat ) is high.

Basically drop the lower unit off the outdrive, remove 2 screws, the shift shaft bushing housing and shift shaft, replace it.I'd do a pump impeller and of course new oil.

The only time I've seen the shift shaft assembly leak is when the drive was (attempted) to be installed wrong. It bends the shaft.

Who had the drive off last ?

I've seen the old white plastic bushings leak with no pressure, or bent shaft. Just start leaking.
I would guess they drained the drive and pressure checked it to be sure that is what was leaking, and it all takes time, including moving the boat, refilling the drive and reinstalling on boat. Then they have to put it back. Again more time.

thanks, not having an i/o or rack storage those are some points i wouldn't have thought of. i think he's going to let the marina do the work as they know how and he doesn't.
