Mine knows a little English. She recognizes and responds to these English words/phrases.

bar-b-que
ham
treat
chicken
turkey
bacon
you wanna go out on the deck? (back of house)
you wanna go outside? (means front porch)
you wanna get down? (from my lap)
fishin rod (toy tied on with monofilament)
scratch your back?
I?m gonna gittcha (aggressive play)
move
hungry?
pick you up
string
rope
go to the garage? (go to my downstairs garage/shop)
wife?s name
my name
No, it?s not time yet (for a treat)
Pumpkin ? her name
catfood
bird (kinda/sorta)

And she's a cat.

My son married a young lady whose first language is not English.
I kid that my cat knows more English than his mother-in-law. And it may be true.

Our boy knows the following and he is only 10 months old:

sit
stay
stand
come
focus (looks you in the eyes)
down (lay down)
down-down (chin on the floor)
bone
ball
toy
walk (we're going for a walk)
belly (roll over and show your belly)

The cat on the other hand doesn't know any words (that I've noticed). He does however respond to clicking noises and some hand signals (when he feels like it).

We had a shepherd when I was a kid. I think the only word he new was garlic bread. If we said it he would go nuts to get some so we had to spell it to each other.

Re: Does your 4-legged family member know English?

Haha yes! Here are the ones I can think of... Most of these are for the Weimeriner. The Lab doesn't know as many or if he does he doesn't let on. The Weim is too smart for his own good. The Lab is HIS dog.:D

Where's the squirrels? -> Runs out in the yard looking for squirrels.
Who is that? -> Alerts to anyone outside.

Come
Stay
Down
Shake
Roll Over
Round and round -> Spins around.
The Weim will do all of the above and more with only hand gestures too.

What can you do? -> Performs random "trick" for a treat.:D
Go lay down -> Gets in his bed.
Go get in your nite nite -> Gets in his bed.
Crate -> Gets in the crate.
Big Crate -> Gets in the kennel outside.

Where's your rope?
Where's your baby?
Where's your ball?
Where's Alfie? (the Black Lab)
Where's the kitty?
Yup he knows the difference.

Cookie? -> knows they're getting a dog biscuit.

Go tell daddy! -> She sends the dog to me.:D

Wanna eat? Hungry? -> Knows it's feeding time.
Show me what you want -> Shows me the plastic pitcher I scoop the food with.
Bring it here -> Brings me the pitcher.
Go/Go get it -> Goes after something after being told to stay.
I'm gettin' it -> Fetches whatever he was reluctant to fetch because he thinks I'm going to get it first.:D

Speak -> Weim = nothing, Lab = bark!

Pretty Boy -> The Lab will sit up on his hind legs with front paws up in the air. He uses his tail for balance like a tripod. The Weim cannot do this because his tail is docked.

Out! -> dogs leave the room (example: kitchen)

Load up! -> Both of them jump up in the truck bed.

my 4 legged companions are cats. i think cats understand exactly what ya want. not like a dog by any means, but they understand. i also think cats are so aloof that they'd by darned if they'd let a mere human think that they understand what you may want... so they do whatever they want.

great looking dogs posted up guys...

i've known 2 outstanding dogs. one a Sheppard, one a Sheppard/Collie mix. both were verbally commandable to the max.

:D:D:D

We have a spray bottle labeled "Dog and Cat Poision". Of course it's filled with water. It's very effective on the dogs. It will get the cat off the counter but she will keep coming back. She thinks it's a game (and so do I!). I'm thinking about some increased firepower for the cat like one of those battery powered full-auto Uzi water guns.

Great idea. You could actually "blast" the cat off the countertop !!!:D:D

Re: Does your 4-legged family member know English?

We have a Doberman who is 10, and he understands a lot more than I think dogs should. I talk to him all the time and give him ambiguous commands and he does them. I know they're only able to understand vowels, but I tell ya, he does pretty well.

On that note, we went to my sister's for Christmas Eve Dinner and brought him, the kids, everyone else. It was a melee with the rest of the family and their kids. Well we finally went to pack up and got the kids in, parents in, 50,000 opened gifts, etc, and headed back to folks house. Got about 4 blocks and realized we forgot the dog. Ugh.

Went right back and got him and I SWEAR he was bi***ing me out all the way back home. 20 minutes of groaning and whining. Unebelieveable. Never make that mistake again. LOL. Dog owner of the year award here, eh?

I noticed your cat doesn't know "come here"!!!!!!!!:D

Those darned cats only come when THEY want to come.
I'm a dog man, myself.
Those were some nice doggy pics----I liked the lab and the german shephards. Labs and German Shephards are really nice family dogs I think.

No ... she made me learn cat. Cats don't "do" the "I'll learn commands so everyone will think I'm cute," thing. They tell you to take a hike.

Ever seen an old fat boy wandering around the house "meowing" at the damn cat? Its pretty silly looking, but what the heck, a little insanity never hurts - keeps you from losing your sense of humor. One thing that I have learned, however, is that when the cat is doing something that you don't want her to do, hissing is quite effective!

Now, if I could only figure out how to ask her in cat, if she prefers Santana or The Radiators on the sound system ....

I'm a Veterinary technician in the Army and we occasionally see military members privately owned pets to keep our skills up. We have a saying, when doing an exam on a dog, we determine when the exam is over, when doing an exam on a cat, they determine when the exam is over. LOL, and its the truth. We can wrestle a dog down and muzzle it, but a cat that doesn't want to be handled is too agile and you will get your eyes scratched out. Here is a link for anyone who is a retriever owner, it's pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure the big one, Scout, is about 80% human. He knows more english than my 17 year old son. He also knows German (I'm a police officer and he's my partner, and best friend). He's doing a pretty good job of training the baby, Sam. Wouldn't trade either one for anything in the world.

My weimeriner's name is Scout. My next door neighbor is a K-9 police officer. His german shepherd's name is Bak. All his commands are in German.:)

Miss Kitty understands and gives orders in body language.

She doesn't let the help get too comfortable.
