Keeper is now 17 weeks old and weighs 48 pounds. His last visit to the vet has determined that he has mange.

So is there any ideas out there that is inexpensive on getting rid of this?

Vet has him wearing a tick collar and says this has been working on other dogs. I just feel that this is just a way he can sponge more money out of me.

One friend told me that as he gets older that his immune system should fight it off. Would like to believe this, but I don't want a hairless dog. I don't need a 100 pound Taco Bell dog! :D

Any help will be appreaciated...Thanks......SS

Re: Dog Question

A swim in the salt water every day for a week took care of it with our two dogs!
Ross

Re: Dog Question

Howdy, Mayfloat.

Mange is a common and very curable skin disease.

Too many years ago to mention, my baby sister came home with a tiny ***** puppy she found in a sack at the side of the road. The poor thing was nearly bald with mange.

Our local vet gave her a salve to apply daily. My recollection is that "Smut" was in good shape in a few weeks. She was part of our family for years until tragically killed by, of all things, a hailstone.

If a country vet could do that so many years ago, I would think that a modern vet could do it now.

Maybe there is something wrong with my memory and maybe there is something different about Keeper's problem, but I don't trust a conventional flea collar to do it.

Could the collar be a specific therapy for mange?

Good luck. :)

Re: Dog Question

Mayfloat, My neighbor's dog had mange and we had to help him treat it. My dog book says there are 3 types of mange:sarcoptic (scabies), cheyletiella, and demodectic. All are caused by various parasitic mites and the last one (demodectic) is usually transferred to the pup from the mother. All these mites can be treated by dips which you can get at a pet store. Insecticide shampoos also work. You have to do multiple dips/shampoos spaced about a week to ten days apart to kill all the mites in their various stages of eggs, larva, and whatever. You should also be sure to clean the bedding, etc to get rid of the mites. Of the three kinds of mange, demodectic is usually the most serious since you're dealing with pups and dips/insecticide shampoos should be used carefully. Demodectic mange can also be treated with medication supervised by a vet. Good luck. After my neighbor's dog recovered, he got hit by a car. Really sad.
