Not a question as much as a story:
TLDR: new coils and wires and cheap insurance and a cheap fix.
been putting a 75 Evinrude 50 back together. First trip out it ran well enough except for some stumbles and rough idle I chalked up to needing to tune the carbs in correctly.
later that week I went out to tune them in and they just wouldn’t get right (in my opinion). Kept stumbling and dying on me. Got it to idle kinda correctly and took it out for a run. Wouldn’t rev past 3000. I just knew it was missing a cylinder. Opened the hood and the top plug wire was very loose. Just a touch and is disconnected. Tried to get it back in the coil to no avail. The wire was too big. I shaved some of the insulation off and got it back in. To my surprise that was the cylinder that was running! The bottom cylinder (despite the wire being in) was jacked. Inspection of the wire showed it melted inside.
Anyway - $70 and 2 newly constructed wires and new coils and she runs fantastic!
Some will say you can test and etc etc. But IMO, considering the cost - if you’re stumped on your engines stumble; put these on the list of repairs right next to that carb rebuild.
