First off I have the manual, and followed the prescribed procedure....But I have a few questions. First after putting the ignition system into base timing mode the RPM was set to 1300. The timing was then advanced to 10 deg BTDC. This caused the RPM to increase, so I reset the RPM and reset the timing, did this until the timing was 10 deg at 1300 RPM. is that correct?

Next issue Adjusted Idle mixture and set idle RPM as described. Manual specifies idle speed "in gear". (Now my dumb question)IN gear on the trailer or in gear on the water. My common/uncommon sense says in the water.

After completing the process I observed the timing up to 2500 RPM and it never went past 10 deg. Is this correct, I did remove the grounded lead at the correct point in the procedure.

Limited, is it the Mercruiser Service Manual you have? If so check Book 1 page 4B-19, 'Setting Base Ignition Timing',lock ignition in Base timing Mode. Step 4 'START ENGINE AND RUN AT NORMAL IDLE SPEED'(650 rpm). If you had your engine running at 1300 rpm you were already at almost max advance.
Adjusting Idle Mixture, same page. Leave the ignition locked in the Base Timing Mode. Book 2 Page 5D14.
Adjusting Engine Idle Speed, same page again, ignition still in Base Timing Mode, boat in water, drive in neutral and engine at normal operating temp. 650 rpm.
Hope this helps

Below is pages 4B-19 and 5D-14, from service manual #17 from Mercruiser. Not sure where you got the 1300 rpm reference from? It kind of sounds like service mode rpm from an EFI engine. When you put the TBV in base timing mode (BTM), the timing is not going to change at any rpm as long as it's in BTM. That is why it's there, it stops the movement of the timing.

4B-19
Thanks guys I somehow ended up with Service Manual #24. I gave them my engine SN 0F787870 when I ordered it. Who knows? The engine just did not seem right when I used the procedure in the manual supplied. Hence the cry for help. Don or jlshields, do you know the correct manual # for my engine? Thanks again guys.

Yes, it's manual #17. the part number is
90-823225--1

Book 24 is for 1998 to 2001 engines.

You also need to be more careful when reading and following the instructions. Even if book 24 was the correct manual, the instructions use the 1300 rpm as only a warmup rpm, and not setting the timing. that is done at idle. Look at page 4B-5 of book 24.
