I have an 86 johnson 65HP. I have been following the FAQ's outboard won't start. I have good spark, good compression on all 3 cylinders and for the last few days I have been tracing my fuel lines to check for leaks. I found one and fixed, I changed all of the connectors and switched gas tanks. the only thing I haven't changed is the primer bulb but I think that it's good. I squirted pre-mix into the carb and it still won't start however while doing this my motor was tilted in the up position and I noticed an excessive amount of fluid collecting in the front of the cowl or whatever it's called. I smelled it and it's gas. I couldn't see anything leaking so I had a buddy turn it over while I looked and I noticed something leaking . it's a metal tube that goes into the lower unit ( I'm assuming that's where it goes) I can't really explain it any better. anyway fuel leaks out of there so can anyone help me? thanks. -Mike

ranger_6,<br /><br />I can't explain the tube. But, you're going to have a hard time starting that engine in the "up" position.

ranger_6....are you talking about the tube that the lower unit pivots on when you turn it? It is possible that the fuel is running out of the carbs into the cowling and then running down past the powerhead and down this tube and the lower unit. I would try lowering the motor, prime it and try to start it again, also make sure the carb bowls are not overflowing due to a stuck float. What was the reason for trying to start it in the up position anyway?

Well judging by the reply's I can now tell that I shouldn't try to start my motor in the up position. Just goes to show you how much I know about boats. What's this about checking the carb bowls and the float? how do I do that? I'm waiting on a manual but I was tryin to get it runnin soon cause I have some nice weather here and I'm goin through fishing withdrawls. thanks for your help so far -mike

i'm sure its a stuck float, especially if you press the primer bulb and it doesnt get hard. Sometimes it could be freed by filling the carbs and leting it soak for a few days, but its better to just strip the carbs down.

Guys....you suppose the tube ranger is talking about is the tube that the carb cover drain hose connects to?<br /><br />Ranger...look for a hose coming off the carb cover on the port side at the bottom of the cover. It should connect to the nipple located under the bottom carb. Could at least explain the gas running everywhere on the motor.<br /><br />Sometime some light taping on the carb body will dislodge a stuck needle valve.
