im looking into purchasing my neighbors 1987 donzi z21 with 305 chevy. Its been sitting there for about a year and a half so I knocked on his door and asked if he wanted to sell and he was very interested. I regularly buy, service and sell used outboard 2 stroke motors. So this would be really going out my boundaries with a 305 chevy and inboard outboard set up. He said the boat was running great through the last season he had it out. He said one coil was misfiring but that he never got around to changing it. He said its got a holly marine carb. and lower shifts good. Looking forward to seeing it run this weekend.

My question is what is a boat like this worth after all the upholstery clean and fixed, motor serviced, and turn key setup.
I just about finished all my projects and sold them off and looking for a new one. Here are the pics.

I have an '87 that I have done a LOT of work to. Now the transom needs repair and I am ready to move onto a different style boat (pure ski). Here are a couple of things regarding your possible project:

  • Check to stringers as they tend to rot
  • if it is a 305 it is not original. They came with either a 350 or a 454 (almost all are 350)
  • check the joints for the outdrive. Mine needed to be replaced as they tend to rust as the water seeps in as the boots for the outdrive tend to rot
  • wood in seats tend to rot (had to rebuild backseat and bottoms of front. Then had all reupholstered (I spent ~$3k on that)
  • gas tanks on this style tend to leak over time. Check thoughly as fumes in a boat are not a good thing
After all is said and done it MAY be worth $6k to $8k

So say it out loud and go from there " A 26 year old boat that is underpowered, have a track record of rotting, with unknown engine and drive condition" draw your own conclusion from that alone. With that said a Donzi is a very high end boat always has been and will be, the 305 could be replaced with a 350 vortec etc etc. could end up with a killer boat in the end, just depends on what kind of a project you are looking for and how much time and money you want to drop BEFORE you even get it out on the lake.

if it runs good and everything, it looks like it will clean up pretty nice. the bigger donzi's and pretty highly regarded in the performance boat game so its a quality built boat. i would do as said before me, check the stringers and transom, walk the floor for soft spots, if there are soft spots then more than likely the floor and stringers underneath are rotten. when you say upholstery fixed there is a pretty broad range there. you could spend from $500-$3000 on upholstery. im assuming it has a sun pad on the back, check and see if its solid. that can be an expensive repair. depending on what you find, i would say $2000-$2500 needing work, and if everything checks out then $6000-$8000

I believe that Donzi he is looking at is one that was not built by Donzi. They outsourced there "non" performance hulls and just slapped a decal on them so most people thought they were getting the real deal, wrong. Not worth 6-8K maybe 3-4K depending on condition as mentioned in previous replies.

SOOOOO the meat and potatoes is that if you are real careful how you spend money on the project you MIGHT not lose money on it when you sell it ...... MAYBE
