Dove hunting permission

Hi all,
Dove season is just around the corner. I got written permission to hunt on my neighbor's farm. He wrote me a permission slip on his farm business letter head and he signed it. He did this back in 2001. I carry this permission slip with me when I'm out hunting on his property. Now, a friend told me that I should really get him to date this permission slip every year, so that If I get in a run in with Fish and Game Officers it will be current. Is this really necessary? The permission is dated for the year 2001 and it has my name on it and his name too. I really never thought about getting it "renew" every hunting season. For you hunters and land owner out there what do you think?

Thanks.

Re: Dove hunting permission

Does the fish and game officer really care if you have permission?
Do they come up to you and ask if you have permission?
Is a written permission slip the tradition in your area?

Around here, the wardens are only concerned with compliance to the game and firearms laws.

"Permission" would only be an issue if the land owner decided that he no longer wanted you on his land, and he called the sheriff or warden to have you kicked off his land. In which case, the sheriff is going to kick you off, whether you have a slip or not.

You need to check with your local game warden. One way to check is to go on line to your state's game management website and browse through the hunting regulations or look through the reg book. Here in Oklahoma this requirement was updated last year. You have to have written permission on your person for the current year.

when I give permission for someone to hunt my land it is not writen. And it runs until I tell them to get off! The ranger don't care about permission slips ;) long as you have the proper licence/s, stamp/s, gun safety (if young enuf). That is between you and your neighbor, have fun!

I have never seen a ranger on private property, I have heard of it one time about 20 years ago (or so)

It depends on your local regulations. If he's your neighbor, why don't you just make a new permission slip with no year specified and have him sign it. Then it's good until he tells you otherwise...

Around these parts the officers don't go on private land without a complaint, for that matter they seldom get out of the car except for coffee and donuts

Re: Dove hunting permission

I own 48 acres of forest land with a trout steam running through it in central Wisconsin. Since I now live in SoCal I no longer hunt or fish on it. Guarantied to get 2-3 deer off of it. I have a buddy who I let use it. I give him a notorized letter with a specific end date (Dec 31 200X) giving him permission to hunt, fish and also control who is alowed to be on the property. The last part alows him to press trespassing charges. He has had to call the sheriff twice because people had set up tree stands on the property and both times the sheriff has treated him as if he is the owner. Also I put my mailing adress and phone numbers on the letter. I try support responsible hunting when ever I can.

Fish and Game Officers don't enter private land without complaint or reason to believe you are up to no good. As long as the owner says it is ok .... although it may be better to 'refresh' his memory, and put your mind at rest.

I have hunters who hunt my property for Turkey and Deer. The only thing I require is one of the Hams from the Deer, and they are always honest with me.

I wouldnt sweat it. As long as you still have a verbal agreement everything is fine.
