Ive done some searching and cant find a downloadable service manual for my 1978 85 hp johnson outboard #78ml85c I believe the ser # is. It would be helpful if it is free to as the mercruiser manuals appear to be. I want to download it to my htc evo 4g, which has adobe and other text viewers. Am I crazy for wanting to do this? Just seems to me it would be very conveinient... I apologize if im out of line for asking for it for free. But "cheap" would work too... Thanks for any advice in advance... I think it would be awesome on this platform...

I have never been able to find quality manuals on line. Your best bet is to get the factory manual for your engine, they cost a little more but well worth it. Make sure and use your model number to get the correct manual. Look on E-bay or google Ken Cook for factory manuals.

Mercruiser manuals aren't really free, BC someone's violating the copyright law in making them available at no charge. Mercury Marine has in fact gone after providers of such 'free' stuff and caused the sites to shut down and in some cases brought legal action. If you want free, try your local public library. Some have third party and even in some cases manufactures technical literature. BTW, stuff in digital format sucks if you're even semi-serious about working on motors. Hard copy allows margin notes, etc. that are very handy. If you look hard enough, you might find 'free', but quality may be suspect. Try Ebay for a genuine service manual. They don't cost that much and are way better than the third party stuff like Clymer and Seloc, which are junk in my opinion.

Well I must take exception to your statement, as, the mercruiser service manual is not only listed by chapter, but also indexed with help blue links, on this very website... I understand why they are here as some people do not need years 1968-1989 of various motor types and variations just to adjust timing... Im simply looking for a handy, portable, searchable piece of reference material, and I think it would be wonderful to have on a mobile platform for ease of use... I mean... This stuffs here, and out and about... Im just looking for a pdf form of it, as I have been pretty much ok with the few .pdfs ive found on the net...

Mods, this is why I posted this in the general boating section as I pretty much could have guessed the responses in this section...

Thanks tho for at least replying...

That same stuff was actually available on iboats until a few years ago. Mercury went after the site owner and it disappeared. It's now on some other site, free, but that doesn't make it legal at all. I'm sure if Mercury marine were aware, they would shut the site down in a heartbeat.
