I am only a little frustrated here - please help! Windows XP, Professional edition. Why is it that whenever I try to download an .exe file, it saves it as *.exe.wma? How can I change this? Once it is downloaded, how can I change it to an executable file? Can someone please help me?

Thanks!

I'm not sure why it's saving it like that...you can change it to an executable by renaming the file to eliminate the part of the file name with the ".wma"

For ex:

downloadfile.exe.wma should be changed to downloadfile.exe

You can right click on the file name and then chose rename. You'll see the file name hightlighted and you can then type over the existing filename.

Ya Baldguy, that is what I thought also. However, for some reason, I cannot get XP to let me "see" any extension to change it. If I rename it, it still stays a .wma extension.

In other words, if I go to details, in the folder, it will tell me the name is download.exe Then under type it will tell me it is a "windows media audio file". It won't LET ME CHANGE the extension. At least not in any way I can figure out. RRRRRR

Have you downloaded any other exe files and have they done the same thing or is this just on this one file?

Could be a problem with the downloaded file and not your operating system.

aspect,
When you're in the folder, go to Tools at the top toolbar. Select Folder Options. Select the View tab. If "Hide extensions of known file types" is checked, un-check it. You should then see the entire filename, including the wma and be able to rename it.

Why it's downloading all .exe files as .wma is yet another problem.

Thanks! I knew how to do it, but had a brain freeze for half a day! I did get the extensions changed, but I am still at a loss as to why it is saving it as a .wma extension also. Just completely baffled! Anyone have any ideas?

I don't do Netscape so I can't help you with that.

Re: Downloading Help! AUURRGGHH!

Okay, as best I can tell, it is a Netscape thing to prevent viruses from accidentally being downloaded. I figured out how to remedy the situation on the initial download and keep the program popping up the download manager to keep me protected. Guess it is a good feature, to a point.

Thanks boatbouy and baldguy for your help! You got me thinking in the right direction!
