DP-C1 Drive Goes To Full Up By Itself

Sorry if this posts twice, , I'm trying to do this from a $!#% smart phone as I'm away from home up north Minnesota for fishing opener.
Boat is a 1995 Lund Tyee w/4.3L Volvo GS and a Volvo DP-C1 drive.
Tilt/trim worked fine, all of a sudden I was powering down and I thought I was trimming down, but the drive went to full up on its own.
I shut off the ignition which should have killed power to the tilt/trim moter but it didn't.
Even though the drive was fully up, the t&t motor cycled every few seconds.
All I could do was to grab for any plug at the t&t motor and unplug it.

Any help will be greatly appriciated.
Thanks in advance.

Either your trim switch is stuck or one of the relays failed.

In iether case, when I turned off the ignition switch that should have cut all power to all relays and the tilt/trim switch shouldn't it?

Actually, when the t/t motor would cycle by itself, I could turn on the ignition, push the tilt down button, it would momentarily stop the t/t motor, and I could here relays click.

Turning off the key doesn't cut the power to the trim system. Might want to try switching the relays. If the problem reverses itself --- replace the relays. If it doesn't the problem is most likely the switch or wiring.

Muc,
After thinking on it a bit, I was thinking exactly that. The ignition switch must just make or break the circuit to the tilt/trim switch, but there is always power going to the relays.
I will try switching the relays, or even test them with a meter.
Thanks for the help!

On most boats, you don't need the ignition on to operate the tilt.

My DP-A has to have ignition switch on to tilt. Makes a shallow water approach much more exciting than it needs to be sometimes.

I would change that! No need for it to be on the switch

Hi all,
just thought I'd get back to you with the fix.
My boat too the ignition switch has to be on in order to run the tilt/trim. Most of the time is not a big deal cuz the engine is running anyway.

So, the fix was one of the relays located right next to the t/t motor.
I took them off to test them, see which contact was different between the two relays. Oddly enough, from handling them the contact in the would be bad relay popped back so both relays tested the same.
Installed them in the boat agian and everything worked fine.
Not wanting to have this happen agian, I decided to replace both relays. Ouch!! $70 bucks a pop. I'll keep the old ones in the boat for a 911 situation.
Thanks to all who helped guide me in the right direction. That's what makes this sight awesome!
