Hi all, my dp290 drive has always banged when going into gear. Last year an engineer talked me into getting. 'Cone' changed to alleviate this. He said to run the drive a bit when I got it back, then he'd come down and adjust it to make it smoothly go into gear.
He's not come down despite chasing, so was hoping I'd be able to make the adjustments myself. What do I need to do?
Essentially, the gear cable feels fairly stiff (if I push the neutral button in on the control, it moves lightly), and when going either forward or in reverse, it bangs into gear, which is a bit off putting for nervous passengers!

Thanks in advance.

Most of the time the clunking comes from high idle RPM. Also low RPM if you put it into gear and it hesitates and you give throttle.

your idle speed should be between 600 and 650 rpm when shifting.

Thanks all. The idle speed is there - measured with a laser RPM gauge. Could anything else cause it?

Thanks again.

The brass split ring keeper is the weak link on a AQ series drive replace it with the steel one. Very easy to do.

With the transmission on the outdrive remove the top cap.
Shift it into gear, Forward or reverse can't remember.and put a block of wood between the prop and case. Break loose the nut. It turns clockwise to loosen.
Once loose take transmission off.
On the bench remove the nut. Push down on the shaft a little until the split rings will come out.
The Split ring keeper might be stuck from expansion. Put nut back on to keep the shaft in place and pry the keeper off.
Install new steel split ring keeper, Sometimes its a tight fit but it will go and sometimes takes a little light tapping with a block of wood. Remove nut,
Slide shaft down till you can install split rings, Push shaft up and reinstall the nut. .
Reinstall transmission. in reverse order and once the top nut is torqued to 88.5FP check end play. It should be within spec. Put on top cap, Fill with oil and your done. Takes about a hour.

I have found that after you run the drive for a few hours it will loosen up a little and the end play will grow as the parts re seat in and the top nut will need a shim added. Again easy to do and i can tell you how also if you need to know.
