DP290A water intake

Under the water intake on the lower unit of my DP290A is a hole facing the front. I believe it is supposed to be there. Is that hole supposed to have a plug? When I run my ears to run the engine I have to plug that hole so water will run better through the engine. If that makes sense. I don't see any threads and it looks like it is a passage way into the water intake chamber. Thanks in advance.

You got a pic or a parts schematic you can point it out on ?

Looked all over the internet for a diagram the last few days and found this today in a manual in the boat. It is where it says Packing and Plug. Probably go to a Volvo Penta dealer and get it now that I know what it is called. Not sure how that packing goes in there though as the hole is about the width of the case. And it has no threads.

Ask your dealer if that isn't an exhaust water drain. The schematic is showing you the lower unit drain plug (and seal), but it may actually install on the lower starboard side of the bullet. No threads in the hole is the give away. Check the water coming out, it should be warm with the engine running ...:)

Number 10 is it. Exactly as Outsider said.
For some reason the pic came out very small .

the 1/2" diameter hole centered on the foot nose is supposed to be there. it is to aid in picking up water. No plug unless your running on muffs, then stuff something in there to get the most water to the motor when running on muffs. I use a cork.

the packing and plug is the drain plug which is to drain the oil from the gear case.

It's there to drain the water from the lower unit when you pull the boat from the water.
A cork or a 1/2in dowel or the tip from a pack of silicone will aid in plugging or my personal favorite,"duct tape"

Re: DP290A water intake

Thanks Scott. I have a screw in plug on the starboard side that looks like the drain for the gear case. I thought it would be ok for that to be unplugged when I'm out on the water but that diagram I posted seems to indicate there is a plug that is supposed to be there all the time. Now that I know it is ok to plug it when I'm using the ears I will feel better. If I'm at the dealer I will ask them about it and post what they say.

Re: DP290A water intake

The pack/plug needs to be installed unless you are draining the oil from the drive. That pic is trying to show it from the opposite side it is on. It is low and on the right/starboard side of the drive, not directly in front. That should never be open in the water unless you are experimenting to see how long the drive will last with no oil just water from the lake

The open non-threaded hole is a drain hole to let water that is in the raw water pickup path back out of the drive when the boat leaves the water as in retrieving/trailering. It does need to be plugged when running on muffs. It is like a hole in a straw, when the hole is underwater no problem, but out of the water it is an air leak when trying to use the muffs.

Yes, there is a screw-in plug on the starboard side that looks like it is there to drain the oil. And it is in there luckily. :>) Just seems strange that the diagram I put above shows just a plug and packing. That is, no threads, at least from what you can tell in the diagram. Which lead me to believe that plug and packing goes in the open non-threaded hole. I'm not going to worry about it now that I know it is ok to plug it with the muffs on. When I started the boat I of course didn't know that so was a little concerned there wasn't much water running through the system as it seemed to come out that hole. Kneeling there with my finger over it wasn't the most fun I've had. :>) Now I will just plug it when I do that.

Sounds good, I thought you had taken the pic's depiction as that threaded drain plug being optional!
