I'm going to have to replace my U joint and exhaust bellows on my dps-a here in a few days. Do I have to remove the Gimbal ring and Pivot housing in order to achieve this or can I squeeze them in between the ring and the transom shield and still be able to secure them down properly?

Not the gimbal ring. I always remove the pivot housing on my SX-M. Others do it without removing it but it is way easy once you remove the pivot.

Does it require special tools to get the pivot "hinge" pins out of the ring to remove the pivot housing?

On the SX-M it's just a 1/2" hex. Not sure what it is on the DPS-A. Likely the same.

The pivot pins on the SX-A and DPS-A drives are pressed in and have to be removed, according to Volvo, with a special tool. I've never seen the tool so I'm not sure how "special" it is. For this reason I just left the gimbal and pivot housing on and worked around them. Here's an explanation:

Also this is the whole OEM service manual for your drive, so bookmark it!

Yes,I have reviewed and printed off that whole manual for my reference. I have ordered the special tool . I may attempt to remove the entire ring and pivot as it appears to just be held on with the lower vertical steering pin and two 10mm bolts on top of the ring.

To change my gimbal bearing I removed the gimbal ring and pivot housing as one piece. You are correct, and it is a fairly straightforward removal. The steering pin can be a little pain to line up, and don't forget to remove the trim sender before the ring comes off. Good luck!

Any tip on getting the lower gimbal pivot pin out? I see a cotter pin and will obviously remove it, after that is it driven out from above or below? special tool needed?
