I just acquired in a round about way, my father's 1965 Fabuglas 17 ft. boat with Mercruiser inboard moter. His memory isn't what it used to be.

Here is one problem: I opened up the grease filler hole to have a lot of water drain out and a cup worth of oil. I refilled the housing with the proper lubricant.

Now the question: It appears on the lower unit above and to the left of the grease filler hole, a hole was drilled into the front of the housing facing the bow of the boat on the port side. Is there a legitimate reason for this hole? It does drain water when the stern unit is raised out of the water. The water then beads up and stays in the hole. I touched the water with my finger and more came out. I noticed an hour later that lubricant was dripping out of the hole.

The serial number is 1774662B

Thanks.
Andy
