Drain plug not tight.

Yesterday I cleaned my boats carpet with a light soapy pressure washing. After I was done I tookthe drain plug out of the back of the boat and of course tons of water flowed out.

My problem is when I put the plug back in the boat it wouldn't screw tight. It's one of those plugs with the t-handle. It will push in firm but when I go to tighten it nothing happens. It was working fine until yesterday, any suggestions?

Ayuh,... Either clean up the threads on the inside washer, or Replace it...

Over time they get rusty and stop tightening. Time to pony up $2 for a new one. Any marine or big box sporting store should have one.

Soapy water is slippery. Hold the shell of the plug while you turn the "T" handle. The entire plug is turning and obviously cannot tighten with that happening.

remove the plug and turn the handle. Does the opposite end spin also? I'm talking about the flat washer looking part. It's not suppose to. Sometimes, you have to hold onto the flat part tight against the rubber part with your fingers and turn the handle to get working properly. Just turn enough until you can feel the internal latc onto whatever is inside the rubber housing.

Fall off your wallet and pony up for two new ones. Good grief, they're certainly cheap enough!

hold onto the plate at the back of the plug. the one that has the screw threads in it. turn t handle till it snugs up against the rubber part of the plug. if your having trouble holding the backing plate stationary, lub up the threads a little like Bond-o says. once the back plate is up against the rubber, then retry in the boat. if it gives ya to much grief. buy a new one. one of the cheaper boating items to buy. i got me a few stashed around too. i replaced mine last year for the rubber degrading. a good plug is money in the bank, or at the very least a good start towards not sinking...

phooey on wally world (imho), cheap or not. support your local marine dealer or get one from iboats.. http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Drain-Plugs/dm/*******.212102399--**********.724588603--view_id.257673

The T-handle and snap drain plugs are made so cheaply nowadays I would just plan on replacing them annually... it's not worth the risk.

Is your transom drain not threaded, or are the threads worn or damaged? Solid brass threaded plugs work great. They don't dry-rot, and they last many years, unless of course, you lose it;). All plugs are inexpensive enough to keep multiple plugs on the boat, and in your tow vehicle, just in case.
