Draining battery

I've got a 1996 60hp Mariner. At the beginning of the day, my battery was reading fully charged, had no problem starting engine. As the day went on, I noticed the meter and the battery was slowly draining. Within a couple of hours the the engine just quit. From my understanding, the stator and voltage regulator are the things to look at in this situation. Is there any tests I can do to eliminate either/or, and is it recommended to replace both?

Re: Draining battery

The first thing I would be looking at is the regulator/rectifier as the culprit. Generally, if your system isn't charging, that's what it is. This is not to say that is it definetly, but just a good guess. At over 100.00, it's not a cheap fix, but nessesary.

Rectifier

Some electrical reading numbers;

web page

This may help, too:

web page

Re: Draining battery

Voltmeter should read a bit over 12 volts with ign on and go to between 14.1 and 14.7 running.
Any less and it's not charging enough and you need to do what rick has said.

Re: Draining battery

I just replaced both the stator and voltage regulator and all seems to be working well. The voltage is climbing on the meter and it's time to go fishing!!
Thanks for all the help!
