Re: Dremel

I have the flex shaft, I changed the chuck to a hand chuck (no wrench) and I have an attachment that turns it into a roto zip tool. Lot's of fun!

Get the fiber cutting discs they are great oh and some safety glasses.

I have polihed numerous triggers, sears and gun parts with mine.

Cutting drywall is a cinch but the DUST!!!!! Keep an eye on walmart they have clearance sales on the attachments yearly.

Re: Dremel

I agree with Bob_VT about the fibre discs. They want an arm and a leg for them, but they last far longer than the other cutting discs. They are the most useful attachment on the Dremel.

The second most often thing I have on it isn't available from Dremel, but they're little serrated carbide end mills with a 1/8" shank. Great for all sorts of things (especially centreing drill holes when drilling out broken bolts in outboards), and they're just about the only thing that busts through old grout in a hurry.

For carving though I suppose a collection of burrs, cones, etc cutters, would be best.

Re: Dremel

I bought the drill press attachement. I used to make my own printed circuit boards and the drill press was needed to do perfect drilling. I have the polish kit, the router kit and the chainsaw sharpening kit. If you dont own one you will think you dont have a need for one however once you own one you cant live without it.

Sharpen blades with a dremel?? I would think that would take all day. Some jobs are just better suited for a good ole angle grinder

Re: Dremel

Great product!!

I have 3....Two at work in my shop (one permamnently mounted in a drill press, the other is cordless) and one at home. I just used my dremel to cut the hole to install an in dash stereo in my boat.

The attachments can be pricy when purchased individually and therefore the best value is usually recognized when purchasing a kit which includes an assortment of the most used accessories. There are also some dremel knock off accessories which can be found at tool stores for less $$.

Recently I broke my flex shaft. The folks at dremel were nice to work with and 3 days later I had a replacement in the mail.

The kit is also for sharpening shears and all sorts of things. I dont know about you but if I am going to sharpen some pruning shears.....the bench grinder is my last choice. I ont think it will take all that long. When you dont run over rocks or sticks much, there is isnt a whole lot of grinding necessary. Might use the bench grinder to get the bigger nicks out, then use the dremel to get a nicer edge as it will keep a constant angle.

I could shave with my pocket knife and I sharpen it with flat sharpening stones. For shears, axe scissors, machette's its a flat file. Grinding at high speed takes the temper out of the steel. Once an edge is properly cut on a blade with a stone or file it is easily re-sharpened with just a few strokes of the stone or honed using a leather belt. Provided you didnt cut a tin can with it.

A utility knife cuts dry wall pretty good if you cut the paper on both sides and snap/break it at the cut.

Dremels are great for fast prototyping customizing. I've used them at work but I dont own one. jus my 2 cents. :)

You jinxed me Noel!.....Yesterday ran over the water meter with my riding mower and one of my blades hit it, I continued to mow and I was not impressed with the results. Sorry to hijack, thought we might be amused at myself. :)
