considering adding a jack plate to my runabout. construction of the transom is your typical glass-wood-glass sandwich.

if i add a jack plate, i'll have to drill through the transom, but once done, i don't know the proper way to seal out the water to keep it from getting to the wood core.

i searched this forum using "drill" "transom" "hole"

i'm sure the answer is in this forum. if you don't want to go through something that's been discussed a million times before, feel free to link me to a thread and i'll read it myself.

thanks

3m4200 sealant. If you go with 3m5200 you might not be able to take it apart again.

Being just a Cadet,I don't want to step on any deck shoes but,I have always(after my first rotted transom) sealed the wood core with epoxy first, then redrill, then use 3m 4200 as the 3m 5200 simply won't let you remove it without a lot of trouble.Think ripped out F/Glass.

bolt and nuts. you can also fill the hole with marine tex, and redrill, after it sets up.

yes, i was was planning to use thru-bolts backed with nuts and washers just like TD. Sooo, in a nutshell, drill through, seal the walls of the hole in the wood, seal around the faces of the glass where washers will sit, then assemble.

does this sound about right?

just put 3M4200 in the holes and on the bolt then tighten, that will seal them, be sure to clean up any 'oosee' immediately

for places where it's stripped and through bolt not an option, marine tex and redrill is the way to go? Marine tex won't chip out on the re-drill? Haven't used it before.
