My SIB is brand new. I've been researching the archives and if I bolt my engine down, and go with retractable boat launching wheels I've got 10 new holes or 10 potential area's rot can start.

I've already got 6 holes (lift rings and manual bailer plugs) so now I'm up to 16 holes. What's some basic rules about drilling holes?

Would be advisable to place sealing material around internal hole wall, let dry well, or wrap around each bolt lenght theflon white tape to enter a bit tight into transom plywood holes, place sikaflex, silicone around head bolts and nuts when completely tight to transom as to protect internal plywood from water intrussion to avoid rottenness.

For the motor mount bolts, which I remove when I take off the motor from time to time, I used a Q-tip to seal the inside of the holes with several coats of penetrating epoxy.

Drilling new holes is sometimes unavoidable but I try to use existing holes as much as possible. For example, I've made SS brackets for VHF radio, fishfinder/GPS and a rod holder that are mounted on the ends of the existing U-bolts that were already in the transom when I got the boat.

My boat has not arrived yet cuz not everything is ready for delivery and I told the guy wait until everything I ordered is here before sending it. However, he must drill some holes to install flag pole, all around safety light and then the launch wheels, and I think one more thing but cant think of it. All will be demountable but I still need to secure them. Do you have to drill holes also for the engin to be secured?

Just for theft issues if you think that procedure will disappoint thieves , if mounting, demounting frequently, just secure tight both metal clamps to transom and place a rope between clamp eyes. Bolting engines to transom are for bigger engines which doesn't have clamps.

Use 3M5200 for sealing the below water line holes. As long as you drill even number of holes you'll be fine...

say what?

Odd ones let water in and hopefully the even ones let the water out... or so I think that is what was told to me... jk

Maybe you can get a 360 degrees light fixed to the engine like this:

It's as sucker pad you place when you leave and take when you go.
