This is the first boat I have owned with the new dripless stuffing box and have a question as to doing an engine alignment. Because the new box is mostly a piece of flex hose it does nothing to support the prop shaft. As a result when you pull the flages apart the shaft drops and moves about 1/2" down and to the side. With the old stuffing boxes you had an indication of alignment when the flanges were seperated and the shaft and flange should be able to move about the same distance up and down left and right with reference to the tranny flange. If this step was o.k. you went on with pulling the flanges together and using a .003 fealer guage to get the flanges parrallel to each other.Does anyone know what the procedure is with the new stuffing boxes? Also we know that if the flanges are tight on top we would lower the front engine mounts or possibly raise the rear mts. depending on the nuetral position of the prop shaft flange.Mercruiser says to raise or lower the front or rear mounts together as pairs the same amount. Does anyone know what mounts to adjust if the tight spot is between the top and side of the flanges , say at maybe 45 degrees from the top? Would you adjust the mount that is diagonally opposite the tight spot?

Re: Dripless stuffing box

You would lower the front opposite mount to correct that. Just make sure that your shaft and flange on the motor are still on the same axis along the centerline as this can pull the flange to the side making them offset. You may have to adjust the motor slightly to realign them. By making small adjustments with fequent alignment checks (and patience lol), you will soon have them exactly where you want them.

Re: Dripless stuffing box

Thanks for your answer wallbanger2, thats what I thought would be the mount to adjust the front mount oppsite the tight spot. The only thing I'm not sure of is this part about initial alignment with the shaft and the dripless box.Maybe I should just forget that and just adjust the mounts.<br />As of now there is about .010 clearance opposite the tight spot. The reason I decided to get into adjustment is I have a sort of squeel noise when I put my port engine in gear and start to throttle up, it does not happen at idle only between about 850 and 950 rpms and as you throttle up further it diminishes and goes away at 1000 rpm's. The noise is pretty loud and the mercruiser book says something about a noise and possible missalignment causing it.The fluid in the tranny looks normal and does not smell at all.And the tranny has been trouble free. This is my first time for the dripless box and wonder if it is possibly making the noise? I have sprayed everything with wd40 while the noise is there but it has no effect.I have even sprayed thru the access hole to the flywheel thinking it might be the damper plate assy.no change.
