I grounded my 2005 Volvo DP-S Duoprop and lost drive, I think it may be the drive saver coupler where is this located and is it a DIY fix.

Re: Drive saver coupler

With a bit of luck it is just the props spinning on their shear bushing, otherwise it could be the engine coupler which is an engine out job. Never heard of a "drive saver coupler"!!!!

I think you may be thinking of the driveshaft coupler located between the top and bottom halves of the drive. Its supposed to shear in cases like this. It could also be the prop hub slipping. In my opinion, Yes, the coupler is a DIY project. Basically unbolt the top from the bottom half of the drive. Here is a link to a very similar unit http://forums.iboats.com/volvo-pent...es-outdrives/destroyed-volvo-gear-600525.html

Re: Drive saver coupler

Thanks I will now seperate the units to look, I got the props off eventually and taken off the covers to gear box and the prop shaft just spins when its in either gear so the prop hub is OK even thou the forward prop blade is slightlly bent I did not want to go any further not knowing that coupler was accessible and a complete strip down with special tools might be needed so I will seperate the top and bottom units to investigate this further

Re: Drive saver coupler

If the coupler is not sheared, and if you have a rubber hubbed propeller, its possible the rubber hub is spinning inside the prop. You cant do it by hand as its still a pretty tight fit, but in the water, the engine can spin the rubber in the prop without the prop turning (or the prop turning very little). Its alot like a slipping clutch in a car. Good luck.
