I'm looking for some advice regarding the drive shaft for a 1986 Volvo Penta AQ131/275. I am in the middle of a drive shaft bellows replacement when upon inspection I notice play in the drive shaft. There are no visible bearing retainer clips and the seal appears to be in good condition. ( I assume retainer clips are behind the seal?) There is approximately .050" play both fore/aft and up/down/left/right. (A very noticeable wiggle)

My first question is, should I replace immediately?
Secondly, after reading several related post it appears that there are 2 models. One that requires pulling the engine and one that does not. How do I determine what type I have? I have attached 2 photos.
Please help... Thanks

I have the same engine and drive as you. When I replaced my bearings I had to pull the engine. I know guys who have been able to do it from the outside, but it's difficult to get the retainer clips out and returned correctly. You also need a way to pull the shaft without damaging it. I have seen it done once with modified vicegrips and a slide hammer. The stickies at the top give the service manuals that you will need. Good Luck.

Absolutely, if the bearing comes apart and damages the housing or flex plate, you will watch $$$$$$$ flying away at a rapid rate.

Your housing only has 1 bearing in it. And unless it's corroded or rusted into the flex plate or flywheel cover you should be able to remove the snap rings and pull the shaft out the back without pulling the engine. May take vice grips with protection for the splines. Don't want to damage those.

Thank you for the reply!! Do you have any suggestions for removing the seal? I assume, poke a hole and use a hook tool?
I am wondering with service from the rear without pulling the engine, are there parts I may omit due to lack of access?

Does this look like the appropriate parts list?
70 Sealing Ring 946242 1
71 Ball Bearing 11013 1
72 Snap Ring 914533 2
73 Snap Ring 914462 1
74 Sealing Ring 958860 1

Thanks for the help..Jason
