I need to replace the driveshaft bearing on a 200hp 1998 mercury. the lower unit is already dropped and I see the bearing, Which is destroyed, what other damages could of happened there was a little bit of shavings in the LU but not enough to worry about. How hard is it to replace this and is there a recommended torque for the new bearing.

Thanks car for the info. Unfortunately That lower unit is different than mine. There are 2 bearings on the driveshaft for the 2000. Mine only has the one It looks like an easy fix as long as nothing is damaged and the driveshaft isnt bent. now i just need to find out the proper torque value on the bearing.

Re: Drive shaft bearing replacement 1998 200hp

I was referring to the tapered bearing located on the driveshaft below the impellar. In the manual for the 2000' there are 2 tapered bearings on the drive shaft. where as the diagram in the link to the above post there is only one bearing. I removed the retainer and took out the driveshaft bearing it was completely destroyed. I think the driveshaft might be ruined also it looks warped and there seems to be chunks of metal fused to the shaft itself..
