I have a 1975 chrysler 90HP and I put a seal kit in the lower unit. I read the manuel and it tells me to torque the dive shaft gear to the drive shaft to 80lb, But when I do the drive shaft is hard to turn by hand. I have read and reread and read again and it is still hard to turn. I dont know if I am doing somthing wrong, But maybe some one could give me some help.

Something sounds like it's not put together right. How far down did you tear it apart? You have to find out where the binding is coming from. You may have to remove the fwd and rev gear and torque pinion nut down and check for binding. Did you look at the mechanical diagram and see if you have all the parts in the right places?

Yes I did but if I torque the gear down to the drive shaft at about 20lbs it turns easy and if I go to 80lbs it is tight to turn. now I did tear the lower unit all the way down to taking the prop shaft out but I did not tear the prop shaft apart because it looked real clean. and put the new seals on and now its tight. :(

Did you remove the prop shaft and then tighten the pinion nut to see that is where the binding is coming from and not from the pinion gear coming into contact with the fwd or rev gear?

I am sorry.. I meant remove the fwd gear and tighten input shaft pinion nut. I just wanted to know the binding is coming from the input shaft.

Re: Drive shaft Hard to turn

Hi Chrysler<br /> I have given this some thought and did a little research. Bottom line, something is not put together correctly. I suspect it is shims. How about the upper drive shaft bearing? Did you put the shim back under it? Is the lower drive shaft bearing installed properly? OK how about the forward gear? The bearing race seated properly? The bearing and gear seated in the race? Is the small shim installed in the face of the forward gear? Or did it fall out while you were torqueing down the pinion nut? Did you install the pinion nut correctly, facing the correct direction? Is it upside down? I'm sorry I don't have a definative answer for you. These are just some seemly simple things to check for. I have been hung up myself many times over the simplest darn things. These things can be like a crossword puzzle. When you get hung-up take a break for a while. When you come back to it everything seems to just fall into place. Remember it is ok for us to take a break, we're not getting paid.
