Drive shaft o-ring and lu mounting

I've seen some posts mention an o ring that goes on the drive shaft in a groove right below the splines. My old unit didn't have one, the new one didn't come with one, and I can't find it on the parts list or service manual. I do have a groove of sorts. Do I not need it? Or should I just go ahead and put one up there? If so, do you know the size? Should I try to clean the splines up in the crankshaft...i can see some grease and dust up there.

Also, what is a good grease for the splines (I know not to get any on the top), and what is a good gasket sealer?

The manual lists OMC moly lube, triple guard grease, adhesive M sealant, Gasket Sealing compound, etc. I can't get the OMC stuff very quickly...what else could I use? Is there anything you would put on the lower unit screws before mounting it back up? I also want to make sure I am using the best possible gear lube...any thoughts? Lastly, the drain screws have the old nylon washers on there but I have the newer orings, ok to switch?

Thanks guys!! If you can't tell, I'm swapping lower units and almost there! Need to thank you all again for your help in getting this far!!

I believe that o-ring prevents water from entering your powerhead.

In 1993, the o-ring is in the crankshaft. On earlier driveshafts, the o-ring is in a groove on the driveshaft, below the splines.

Moly Lube #0175356 is high temp, high friction grease, like brake and caliper grease.

When an O ring is fitted in that location it is to prevent water getting into the drive-shaft to crank-shaft splines

Gasket cement or non hardening Permatex.

Only if the screws have grooves to accept O rings. The nylon washers work fine.
