Drive shaft pinion gear question.

I posted this question last week and had a couple of replies but before I could read them the big whoops! happened and they where lost for all eternity.<br /> Anyway my concern is the torque value for the drive shaft pinion on my Chrysler 105. The clymer shop manual calls for 85ft lbs. This seems an awfull lot of pressure to put on the bearing. Does it really want to be so much? Am I missing something like misinterpreting the torque value wrong. For now I have just nipped the nut at about 10ft lbs. What stops the nut from working loose? What about drilling a hole through the nut and shaft for a cotter pin?

I agree, that does sound like a lot but I checked the torque specs for my 200hp Evinrude and it sez 60-65ft/lbs. so maybe that's right.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

85 ft lbs is correct with a new nut. The shims control how tight the bearing is. The torque on the nut is suppose to keep it tight. Did you check for the correct shimming of the drive shaft, and prop shaft?
