drive shaft play in 1997 evinrude 225

My 97 evinrude 225hp ocean pro overheated. Upon disassembly, I noticed that there is some play in the drive shaft. Is this normal? If so, how much play is acceptable.

That motor has a two piece driveshaft and that is the probably the play you are seeing. Is it a wobble back and forth?

Yes, I spoke to a guy who knows a lot about that motor and he let me know that the play in the shaft is correct. Thanks for the reply.

while its apart I reccomend replacing the driveshft housing seal. that shat is held steady by the water pump. was a poor design but it is what it is. as the pump wears and the shaft wobblles they have a tendacy to tear up the seal. its common on the 2 piece shaft models.
