Drive shaft question, getting ready to re-assemble my outdrive after a water pump replacement and a shift shaft seal. I know I was able to turn the drive shaft when I did the water pump as I had to turn it to get the impeller into the housing. When I replace the seal on the shift shaft I was very careful not to turn the prop shaft while the shift shaft was out, and I put the shift shaft back into the same position it was before I removed it.. After replacing the shift shaft seal and with the water pump housing tightened down, I can’t turn the drive shaft by hand. Is this normal with a new water pump?

Re: Drive shaft question

It will turn hard due to friction. Did you put some liquid dish soap on the impeller when you installed it? That will make it a little easier to turn.

Re: Drive shaft question

i did not use the soap at install. i'll make a note of that for next time.

I was thinking of loosening up the water pump housing to see if the driveshaft will spin. Worth doing or not needed?

Thanks for the quick response Don.

Just Squirt alittle Dishsoap down the Watertube if your That Concerned about it.........

Putting the Prop back on will give you alittle bit more Leverage to turn it with......
