After you pull the driveshaft out of the lower unit there is 2 seals there. Do I need to know anything special about pulling these and replacing them? Any special tool I need or can I coax them out normally? I am the new guy on this block,,,cool place. Thanks

A seal puller will make the job easier. Your local auto parts store should have it. I paid $11 and the seals came out in a couple minutes. Work it out slowly, nibbling around the inside ring.

That tool will gouge a seal housing as good as any screw driver. The proper tool can make a job 100's of dollars cheaper. If the seal is corroded in at all, that puller could make you very sorry. I wonder why they call it a puller?

Good point Mr. Johnson,,,I will be extra careful. I have pulled hundreds of seals before, but never on a boat motor. Believe me I know what boat parts cost. Once again guys thanks for the hot tips. Will let you know how it goes,,should happen tonight when I get the rest of my parts in. Chip

With proper use, it will do just fine. Did it myself (as a newbie). I would not recommend it otherwise. Sheesh!

Man that seal was in there!! I ended up taking a long nose set of tin snips and cutting the middle part outwards 5 spots. This ruined the integrity of the seal and it popped right out. Everything good now,,new seal in,,water pump kit in and I am ready for the rest of my parts to go in.

yea, that's basically how it comes out in the end. After you nibble at it for a while, you can grab it with long nose pliers and persuade it out. Glad things worked out.
