Drive shaft spline/coupler grease

quicksilver products are not readily available where I live. Is there a suitable alternative to use to grease the drive shaft splines and to pump into my newly installed coupler?

I have always just used marine grease from wal-mart on my old alpha drive. Might not be the best but something is better than nothing and you can always find it so you dont have to worry about mixing greases. I know mercrusier list's alternatives in the manual i will look and see what they recommend if you cant get quicksilver.

I told you wrong, I looked in my manual which is for 4.3 MPI ECT and 5.0 MPI ECT. The manual only list's engine coupler spline grease and gives part number 92-802896A 1. It does not list an alternative like it does with engine oil. You can try to google that part number and find a substitute that is available. Someone might chime in and tell what type is best.

I think these days officially they need different grease. Quicksilver at one point had two different greases for the set up. One for rotational and one for general purpose like splines. These days I’m almost sure they have one that does it all just about. It’s called extreme.
I habe and use this currently ans still have the fumble bearing you can grease (not sealed), but previously on an older engine I used general purpose water resistant grease for the prop spline and all linkages etc and I used a product from Kluber from work that was for high speed rotational bearing and similar applications, for the Coupling and gimbal

Ayuh,..... I use plain ole chassis grease,.........

if my gun has red and tacky in it, I use red and tacky..... if my gun has chassis grease, I use chassis grease.

Whatever is in the grease gun at the time... Splines aren't really as critical as a wheel bearing type application. I've seen PTO splines on large tractors that deal with all kinds of random oil/dirt/dust/grease, and it is rare to actually have a failure at the spline itself. Marine lower unit splines live a great life in comparison!

Thanks for the reply’s. My coupler sees a ton of time at idle trolling for salmon here in Alaska. When I did some research on what causes the splines in the coupler to wear ( my old ones were like little needles and I think I dodged a bullit that it didn’t fail) I read idle is hard on the splines so thought I’d use the grease that gives them the best chance at survival

I guess I've let myself get bamboozled by Merc. I use their coupler grease. Same tube for 23 yrs. I dip the coupler shaft splines in the tube each time I reinstall the drive. I recon any high quality high EP grease should be fine. I think (?) the splines slide a little in the operating trim range under high torque.

I have used same walmart marine grease for 30 years on every boat i have owned .splines,ujoints,prop shaft,gimbal bearing,tilt pivots on bellhousing.impeller on dr. Shaft,trailer wheel bearings.has not failed me .charlie

I have had good luck using green grease on everything for the past decade or so.. // Trailer wheel bearings have had some heavy use with no issues

mis-alignment will kill splines (or most likely the coupler) LONG before idling would take them out. No amount of grease will stop a mis-aligned engine mount from chewing up the splines/coupler.

OMC/Evinrude triple guard grease is great for shaft splines if you can find it in your location.

Agreed, but it didn’t appear to be mis-aligned when I pulled the drive and checked it. I pulled the engine for other repairs and noticed the wear. I’ll be sure it’s aligned properly when I put it back together. I’d did appear to be under maintained by the previous owner......

Ayuh,..... This is absolutely Right,.. ^^^..... The splines are constantly loadin', 'n unloadin' as ya go threw the swells,....

Dry splines will grind themselves to points in no time,.....

You should focus on greasin' 'em much more often, than what grease is in the gun,.......
