Drive Shaft

My cousin has a home made "go-devil" type long shaft mud motor that we are having problems with. No matter what we do we can't get the drive shaft and coupler to stay in contact and not slip. We had the shaft keyed and put set screws in the coupler but it still shears. The key actually sheared off the side of the shaft the other day. The shaft is stainless steel, but perhaps it is too brittle? I am wondering if anyone knows where we can find another shaft, and what type of shaft we should look for to keep it from shearing.
