Drive trim wiring problem

First of all, this is my first post! I've been reading though a ton of posts here and I have already learned a lot, figured it would probably be one of the best places to get some answers on my new (to me) boat. Be warned though, this is my first boat and I have a ton to learn!

I recently bought a 1999 Formula (Thunderbird) 330 Sunsport with dual 7.4L mercruisers and Bravo III out drives.

During my survey it was noted that the port outdrive will trim all the way up as if it is being trailered, while the starboard outdrive stops where it is supposed to. I've been reading a lot about this and it seems to be a common issue, the trim limiter/trim sensor has just failed. Further reading pointed out that when this happens, the drive should not trim up at all with the trim switches, only with the trailer switches. This isn't what I'm seeing though, so I'm wondering if the previous owner knew what the issue was and took a shortcut by just rewiring the trim switch to the trailer switch wires, does that sound logical or could there be another explanation?

Another issue is that sometimes the drives will refuse to trim down with either switch but then a minute later it works just fine. This has been causing issues with me keeping the boat level (side to side) since it's intermitant. Where should I start with tracing this problem?

Last question, for now... my boat has trim gauges, but are those generally for the outdrives or the trim tabs?

Thanks!

Re: Drive trim wiring problem

It may be the trim limit switch on the one that moves full travel, was bypassed inside the boat. Common instead of replacing the switch.

The intermittant could be switch, relays, corroded connections loose wires, check all the conntections.

Here is a Bravo service manual. Has lots of information on troubleshooting the trim system.

Typically, if the gauges look like the rest of the instruments, it's drive trim. Tabs usually have a different type of gauge. (digital with lights) but it also depends on who built the tabs.
