More to add...always, right? While dropping boat in the water hit bottom of fin on lower drive pretty hard. Boat started and ran well for about 2 hours towing skiers out of water when drive disengaged. Could the knock on the lower unit damage? coupler to motor and then towing stress of the next few hours spin it? Once it let go temp shot way up (50 degrees). Is there an easy way to tell if this (spun coupler) is the issue here?
It sound like you have seared your shaft into. I would pull the plug on your drive and see if you have any oil. I would say you ran it dry. More than likely your temp went up because your water pump was not able to circulate water. Good Luck
