Just my luck!!

For that past couple of months I have been fixing up a 1974 40 hp Johnson Outboard. Finally got it running better than it ever has in the past three years. I took it out for a test run and apparenlty tuned it up too well! I stripped the splines on the upper part of the drive shaft(connecting to the crankshaft). From inspection of the end of the crankshaft the splines look worn out as well. I feel like I would be wasting my time by putting in a new drive shaft and don't want to spend the money on a new crank shaft.

Any suggestions as to how I can resolve this problem????

Kwoolard, Man you are in a tough one. I have never had that happen.......Are you sure about the crank being messed up too. If the splines are messed up on the crank, you will have no choice but to replace. I would think you could find parts out on Ebay. Goodluck....BushCat

The splines can be replaced but a used 2 cylinder crank is probably about the same money. Try Jack at Superior (800-338-9281) for pricing. His stuff is good and he's reliable.

Good luck!

Yep, a little hunting around will undoubtedly turn up a blown motor or junker with a decent crankshaft. Start by hitting your local marinas. Ask where they send their junker motors that are too old to fix up... Most areas have some well weathered guy with grease under his nails, usually named Bud, Butch or Charlie, who buys up older late model motors. Find that guy in your area and you'll find what you need.
- Scott
