driveshaft into lower unit

I removed old impellar and driveshaft was removed from lover unit so I could persuade the frozen impeller to come off- On reassembly I dropped the driveshaft into the lower unit but It did not engage the gear-so when you turn it clockwise does not turn the prop-its also a wee bit too high up for the impeller what did I do to cause this? how do I fix it? motor is a Johnson 87 25hp

Nattyboomboom,
I just had the exact same issue and the fine folks on this forum suggested that I insure it's in forward gear. Once moved it to forward and turned the driveshaft, it dropped in.
Give it a try. You may need to turn both shafts a bit to find the right spot but it should go in fairly easily.
