1966 Chrysler 9.2hp. I was getting water mixed with the oil in the lower gear box. I pulled the foot, checked the water pump impeller and it looks good. The seal that sits below the impeller was messed up so I pulled it. My question, is the spring side of the seal supposed to be facing down towards the gear case? This was how its installed. Franz has the new seal and its on it's way. Just waiting for advice, closed side down or open side down? Thanks guy's I don't have a service manual on this one and I haven't found one yet.

The spring side of the seal should face up against the impeller.
If you look close to the seal there is a lip and it`s profile makes it seal even more when water makes pressure to it.

Since you have order a new one from Franz Marine you can try to pull it out and put it back in the right way.
Maybe you will destroy it but why not try, a new one is on it`s way.

Thanks Nordin and Jerry. I did remove the seal, it is not useable. I think that this was put in wrong when new! The whole outboard still looks new. I picked this up from a nice old woman, it was her husbands. She told me that he never did buy a boat but would rent "one of those wooden boats at Strawberry lake." Those wooden rental boats have been gone for many, many years. If you want a pic of the seal Jerry, I'll try and post it later.

Spent many, many years in an old wood rowboat.
Good memories.
You don't need a pic.

Some seals were a double lip and would do the job of 2 seals.

Most single seals are installed with the spring facing in , towards the oil !!

racercone I do not doubt you and your experience but all Chrysler OB I have worked with and changed seals, impellers at the gearcase, the seal under the impeller housing have had the spring faced up against the impeller.
The imported thing with the seal then is that the spring is made of stainless steel.

Chrysler/Force has only one seal, newer Johnson/Evinrude and Yamaha from the 80.es use two seals.

Jerryjerry05, my dad used to rent those old wooden row boats. They all came with an old rusty coffee can for bailing out the water, as they leaked. That was my job as a young boy, lol. Yes good memories. The seal arrives today and I'll see if it's magnetic. Thanks everyone.

I installed the seal as Nordin suggested. The seal did have the double lip like Jerry said. I did notice that even the seal behind the prop, the spring was facing out. If time allows I'll start it up tomorrow. All is good, Thanks guys.
