What do you do if your accelerator pedal sticks, car barreling down the highway at 100 MPH, and all brakes fail? You have plenty of highway in front of you with no traffic and a full tank of gas. You have a cell phone with you.

First one who gets it right, wins a prize.

(What others have done coming after the correct answer)

On a straight patch of road, shut off the ignition switch till the engine quits, then turn the key back to the ignition position as not to lock the steering column so you can still steer to pull over...

Heard the story too... ;)

Re: Driving Related Pop Quiz (stupid story later)

WRONG!!! ;)

According to more than one police department, you are to call 911 on your phone, 911 dispacher sends cop cars to intercept, then the cops will get in front of you, they hit the brakes, and that slows your car down.

You must be wrong as this is not the first time this offical technique has been used!!!

P.S. Most modern cars wont let you turn the key to lock if the car is in drive (dont know what happens if it is a stick shift).

Ken

Assuming it has an automatic trans, you would leave the vehicle IN GEAR, turn off the igntion and let compression slow you down. During the slow down, you would want to to drop the tranny into a lower gears to continue your slow down.

After using all the gears, use the emergency brake to complete your stop.

Do the same thing with a manual, or jose transmission.

If the prize is a sheepskin coat, I'll take a 44L, with 36" sleeves :D

...Bob in Calif...

Re: Driving Related Pop Quiz (stupid story later)

BTW, my second post is supposed to be sarcastic. I know that is hard to detect that from the post.

Whats sad is the cops from the latest story said they got the idea from watching some kind of cops TV show. (I am getting all my info from the TV news, so some details may be wrong.)

Didnt any of these people think of turning off the key? I can understand the driver being panicked and not thinking clearly, but 911 dispacher, or the cops should have thought of this.

I am hoping that there was some kinda malfunction with the key on these people's cars. Please someone tell me that. :(

I asked the wife what to do and she never thought of the key. I suggest you ask your significant other. It could save thier life.

I also remember seeing on 20/20 some person crying about the terror they survived when the gas pedal stuck in their rental U-HAUL truck. Some helpful guy tried the cop thing, but his car was like Yugo size. The truck ended up crashing into traffic and killing someone. Sad to say 20/20 never mentioned the solution to the problem, so that others could learn.

Ken

My truck is a standard. I'd just take it out of gear.

Soooo, the cops tell you to talk on the phone AND drive at 100 mph? This is simple basic stuff.
No offense to the members here in blue, (or brown), but I guess there are some dumb cops out there too.

I remember seeing a cops type show about 10 years ago, runaway car, cell phone, cops boxed the car in. The whole time I am thinking just turn off the key, or put it in neutral and let the engine blow, or both, its better than smashing up at 100.

One of the first things you learn on a motorcycle is how to restart it on the fly(not kick start). Pretty simple and basic too, but most people can't do it without stopping to think about it.

Since the early sixties, most automatic transmissions free wheel in all gears but park if the engine is not running. Won't slow ya down via compression.

I'd say kill the engine an ease the emergency brake to get slowed down.

Re: Driving Related Pop Quiz (stupid story later)

Would you believe that something similar to this happend to me? About 2 years ago was about 10:00pm on a local freeway, no other cars. I was doing about 80 mph with my cruz control set on my pickup. Accelerator stuck wide open. I stepped on the brake but it couldn't stop the truck. With brake fully depressed I could slow to about 55 mph. When I let up on brake, truck picked up speed. I finally put it in neutral (engine raced badly) and then shut off the ignition. I had to muscle the wheel to turn off onto the shoulder (no power steering). Had truck towed to local dealer. Dealer charged me $90.00 to tell me that my Cruz control servo was shot. estimated$600 to replace. I unplugged the cruz control. I'm still without it on that pickup.

Just how are you suppose to call 911, if you don't have a cell phone??

Not everyone has one!

Plus, here in NY, it's illegal to drive while talking on a cell phone!!

$150 fine!!!

So what are you suppose to do then??

I've been thinking about this. What would happen if you used your emergency brake?

Re: Driving Related Pop Quiz (stupid story later)

I had a runaway in town a long time ago. I had installed an aftermarket cruise control, and when I accelerated from a stoplight the little chain caught on something and held the throttle open. I simply put it in neutral and killed the engine and stopped. When a car is moving, the steering whether power or not still works fine, it isn't that hard to turn. If you have ebrakes that have the handle next to your right hand, you can slow with it, but make sure you hold the button in and apply even pressure. If you have the left foot ebrake, then you can slow with it while holding out the release so it does not catch. Stuff isn't that difficult. The best thing a person can do is go find a country road and shut their car down while driving and see how it performs. No different than going to a big parking lot after it snows and learning how to drive in the snow by throwing yourself out of control. People never learn how to really drive their cars, they just know how to get it from point A to point B, never thinking about what they would do it it had a malfunction.

If I remember rightly, that show that had the runaway car had it as a runaway AND the key somehow broke off in the ignition and jammed it so it could not be turned off. Me, if that happened and I had a passenger they would be pulling fuses until the engine died.
