yesterday on the water, my engine stopped peeing so i took the thermostat housing off to see how it was. Well the dang thing wouldnt come off so i was tapping on it when it came off and something feel in the water, never saw it just heard it, it happend so qick!!!....I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS! It was something in the thermostate housing......What I had was the thermostat and housing top..What else is in the housing of the thermostat that would sink?? didnt have a rubber ring around the thermostat so that is what i think it might be? however rubber doesnt sink. Can somebody please help me identify what fell in the water so i can replace it! Also, in the housing itself, why is there a hole (square shaped) under where the thremostat goes? It appears to go right above the top cylinder spark plug???

My 89 125 Force has a rubber ring metal trim around it probably would sink, spring about 2 inches long, thermostat and housing, diagram in manual shows a spring clip of some short that fits into the thermostat housing but mine donesn't have that. Hope this will help!

The glimse i did see did appear to be some sort of O-ring. Now with that siad, i took the thremostat out permenatly, and the O-ring you mentioned that fell, is that something on the thermostat itself or something that i need to go and buy to put back into the housing?

Sorry forgot to state my engine....1996 75hp force

On my 89 the rubber oring goes in the thermostat housing.
I'm not familar with the 96 Force.
Call a Mercury dealer in your area see if they have and will fax you a copy of the layout for the thermostat for your engine. Good Luck!

If you intend to leave the thermostat out, all you need is the cover and gasket. BUT---be sure to use anti-seize or petroleum jelly on the cover screws when you replace them. It will make it a lot easier to get them out next time.
