dropping lower unit on 35hp johnson

I'm still having trouble finding how to disconnect shift linkage on 1981 Johnson. The shift lever is just below the cowl on the outside. That is the only place I can find that has anything to do with shifting rod. Does that come apart somehow to disconnect shift rod. I've tried taking it apart with no luck. It seems I will be tearing up more than I'm fixing if I force it apart. Any suggestions?

Remove the plastic water intake screen from the lower unit. Unscrew the top portion of the connector that you'll see there from the bottom portion, then slide the top portion up somewhat.<br /><br />Now, you'll see a cone shaped plastic retainer that is snapped around the top portion of the shift rod. Find the split in that cone, spread it somewhat and remove it.<br /><br />That disconnects the shift rod assy.
