Dropping lower unit to inspect.

-pic 1 below. Is this my shift rod conector?
- should this be removed first?
- Which bolt turns and which direction?
-i tried to unscrew last night but stopped as not to break the rod which was moving more than i felt comfortable. Is that a likely problem or should i give it all i got.

pic 2 below. other bolts that will release lower unit.

Do i twist lower unit out?

What should i avoid doing?

thanks,

Get someone to help you who's done this before ... way easier than explaining every step.

Re: Dropping lower unit question

Follow these directions to view exploded diagrams of your gearcase assembly. I would strongly suggest you purchase an OEM Service Manual if you wish to work on your outboard. That's the best friend you'll ever have. One can be purchased right here at iBoats under the "store" tab or can even be purchased on eBay fairly cheap at times. Good luck!!!............ Alan

O.K........ Click here............ http://www.brp.com/en-US/Related.Products/Parts.htm

Now....... Under the "Parts Heading" click on "Visit the site now".

Next...... Click on the green check mark in the box located in the top left hand corner and select "View Parts Catalogs"

Now....... Click on the "Go" button beside the box, again in the upper left hand corner of your screen, that says "Evinrude". (Johnson owners need to change this to Johnson from the drop down menu first)

Now...... Select the appropriate folders for your year, horsepower, and model number to view the parts lists and exploded diagrams.

Re: Dropping lower unit question

Thanks Alan. Great help. I did purchase a repair guide 92-01 but it only covered V models and mine is 2-c 30hp. Most of it is useful but since i don't know what i'm doing it was very misleading. I'm trying to purchase another pdf version for my model. Thanks again for the advice. And to anyone reading...Trust me purchase the manual. worth its weight in gold.
