My 2001 dt 150 trimmed down ok today, but now it won't trim up. I can hear the clicking sound on the right side of the motor when the switch is pressed, but the pump doesn't turn on.

It did this exact thing the first time I took it out this summer, after sitting up for a few months. Just when I had about given up, it started working and has worked ok since. This time, waiting hasn't cured the problem.

I checked the fluid through the screw hole marked on the unit and it is filled to the top. Nothing else looks out of the ordinary.

Another question - if I can't fix it, what is the best way to lift the motor so that the boat can be trailered? I'm not sure me and my wife could handle it. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance -

P.S. - I ordered a repair manual today also.

Re: dt 150 trims down but not up

It appears your motor mounted switch(button) probably is in need of cleaning. There are two contacts (rocket type) on this little unit that can get dirty and one side may work, the other don't. You can remove this switch and the wires and take it apart to clean all the dirt and such from it.

This just happen to my 1986 Yamaha ProV 150 this year. It would trim down but not up. I taken it apart and it all back to fully working.

Remember this...if the pump working down the pump will work up...that is the pump motor is working.

Re: dt 150 trims down but not up

Thanks for the help - I took the switch off of the cowling, and it is a fully enclosed and sealed unit that sits inside of another gasket that seals to the cowling. It can't be opened, so if that's the problem it will have to be replaced. I can't get to the connections to clean them without cutting sealed rubber casing apart. If the switch was the problem, wouldn't my shifter mounted switch work instead? It does the same thing when either button is pressed.

Thanks again for your help - -

For the motor side switch, you have to remove the complete unit...rubber seal and the inner part to get to the contacts. Remember this... what man put together, man can take apart. The motor switch and the gear lever switch are both connected... to work as one. When one doesn't work, the other one will not work also. You may have to remove both to find the problem. Try the motor side switch first.

Re: dt 150 trims down but not up

Thanks - I traced the wires to two relay switches on the right side of the engine where the clicking sound was coming from. One has a blue wire and one has a green wire. I switched the wires, and now I have up trim and no down trim, which is actually a better problem than I had before, at least from a hernia perspective.

I'm going to try ordering a new relay switch and see if this fixes it.

Thanks again for helping - I'll let you know if this works.

Re: dt 150 trims down but not up

Update - I ordered a new trim relay switch and this has completely fixed my problem, for a cost of $86.00.

I learned a few things. There are two relay switches on the starboard side of the motor, the upper one has a blue wire and colored bolt, and the lower one has a green wire and colored bolt. To access these you must remove the plastic cover on both the top and side of the engine. The upper or blue one is for the up trim, and vice-versa for the lower or green one. All of the nuts in this repair are 10mm, both for the cover and relays.

Here's the catch - if your up trim is not working, the faulty relay is the lower one, or the green one (not the blue one, as I incorrectly assumed). I think this is because they are serially wired, but I 'm not exactly sure why this is the case. My recommendation would be to replace both while you're at it, and you won't have to worry about it for a while.
