Hello, first post as Im a newbie to this forum and boat repair. A little background. I bought a 1990ish Gambler with a Suzuki DT175 outboard, at purchase the owner told me when it was first started it would take a while to warm up, and bog down under load, under the cover the engine looks brand new. I took it out and it fired up straight away, and would idle perfect but when put under any load whatsoever would sputter out and die. I assumed the carbs needed to be cleaned but when I took them down they looked great. I replaced 1 fuel filter and cleaned out the other one, I also replaced spark plugs. At the time that I tore down the carbs I also decided to disable the oil injection and mix it myself partly for reliability and partly because the pump was leaking oil around its gasket. As I had let the boat sit for a good while I changed out the gas and mixed at 50:1 I started the engine up and it fired up quickly but was producing a lot of smoke which I expected but this was a lot of smoke and had a strange smell, and also burned the nostrils. I let it run for a few minutes and then turned it off. It seemed to be pulling good water in through the muffs but felt very hot to the touch. I then recalculated the oil mixture and realized I had under mixed. I added more oil and fired it up again today, again it started straight away but was belching the noxious white smoke, and became too hot for me to hold my hand on in under one minute. so I suppose I have two problems the white smoke and seemingly overheating, as well as its inability to run under load. Sorry for the length, just wanted to get in as many details as I can. your help is greatly appreciated. -Drew

I think I can safely say that you'll never have the cooling from muffs as you will out on the water. I used to run mine for awhile without the hood on and have my wife drive while I was touching the motor all around the water jacket to make sure it wasn't overheating, since I had experienced the same problem, very hot on the heads within a minute while on the muffs. As to the smoke, if you are sure you mixed correctly, then it shouldn't smoke. But on my Procraft, I mixed oil in my 30 gal tank, and put the oil in the gas tank first, then put the gas in next and the same thing happened. The answer was the oil didn't mix with the gas well enough and the pickup was sucking a very heavy oil to gas mix. When the mechanic first started my DT150 at his shop, lots of white smoke, looked like the city was fogging for insects. Until the oil was more thoroughly mixed into the gas, and reached the 50:1 ratio and then the carb bowls cleared of the heavy mix did that stop. Bogging could be carbs still need some good cleaning, they could still have issues of clogging in the main jets, or even need adjustments, But I'd get the smoke issue out of the way, so you have proper fuel/oil mix and then see how it acts.

Re: DT 175 problems

Well, thank you for the info, it could very well be that my oil isnt mixed that well as I only added 4 gallons of gas after draining the old and I did add my oil to the tank first. I will try getting the boat in water to check the heating issue, one thought crossed my mind, if for some reason i was running way lean couldn't that cause my heat issues. would there be any noticeable symptoms of running lean other than the plugs?

try it on the water, just back in to the water but leave it on trailer while you running it. big difference. yea, maybe, carb should normally be 1 1/2 turns on the idle adjust screws, and idle should be around 8-900 rpm's. just don't rev up the motor on muff setup much at all, but on water you can rev up and try tp clear the carbs of the oil mix. andit is a lot quieter in the water

Re: DT 175 problems

I just bought a 150 SS and want to disable the oil injection.

How did you do it exactly. I took the tank off, and am assuming i need to take of or disassemble the oil pump.... but how do you close off all the lines?

Details or even pictures would be greatly appreciated.
